Senator Kennedy was a bigger than life figure. He was one of those men who grew into greatness as the years went by. He was a senator from Massachusetts before I moved to Massachusetts to be part of what Michael Dukakis called the Massachusetts’ Miracle (the minicomputer industry). I have not known the state without him and it is clear the state will be poorer without him. His leadership and skillful political work helped his state and his country to prosper.
The only time I heard him speak in person was at the 2005 Massachusetts State Democratic Convention in Lowell, MA. Our delegation from Norwell, MA was fortunate to be seated directly in front of the speaker’s podium. I was able to see, hear, and videotape Kennedy’s entire speech. I enclose a small piece below. He was inspiring, charismatic, and every bit the “Lion” of the Senate. We shall not see his like again.
